My
Lehman line is documented back to Henry Lehman born December 18, 1808 near
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Devender (last name taken
from her son Simon's death certificate). I have no proof of Henry's
fathers name but the implication is that Martin Lehman born January 1,
1774 in Weisbaden, Germany is Henry's grandfather but do not know which of
Martin's sons (Henry born 12/19/1775, Christian born 5/28/1778, George
born 6/11/1781, Martin, Jr. born 8/8/1787 or John born 8/14/1790) was
Henry's father. All of Martin Lehman's children were born in Lancaster
County, Pennsylvania. Based on the ages of Martin's children, any of the
four oldest sons could potentially have been Henry's father. Logical
assumption would be Martin's son Henry born in 1775 but I have no proof of
that.
Henry
and Elizabeth Lehman had seven children: Maria born about 1830; Catherine
born June 25th, 1834; Simon born December 15th, 1836; Henry D. Lehman, Jr.
born about 1838; Peter C. (my ancestor) born June 7th, 1843; William born
November 2, 1847 and Elizabeth Jane born about 1849. All children were
born in Pennsylvania except for the two youngest, William and Elizabeth
Jane who were born in Wayne County, Ohio.
Of
their children, three sons fought in the Civil War, each in a different
Indiana regiment. Henry Lehman fought with the Indiana
31st in Company F "Greene County Union Guards". Henry's unit
was listed as one of the Top 300 Regiments in William F. Fox's
"Regimental Losses in the American Civil War (1861-1865)". It
fought in such Hellish battles as Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Stones River,
Chickamauga, Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain Siege of Atlanta, Franklin and
Nashville. Henry survived the Battle of Shiloh only to be fatally wounded
at Stones River months later. Henry is buried at Stones River, Tennessee
in Section G, grave 2833.
Peter
C. Lehman, my great-grandfather, fought in the Indiana
59th, Company E. This was a volunteer regiment in which he
enlisted December 1, 1861 in Bloomfield, Indiana. His Enlistment papers
state age: 19, eyes: blue, hair: brown, height: 5'9". He was
discharged at Louisville, Kentucky on July 17, 1865. He fought in the
Battles of Vicksburg and Corinth and was with Sherman on his March to the
Sea.
Henry's
and Peter's younger brother, William also fought in the Civil War in the
Indiana 72nd Volunteers (Mounted Infantry). Being that it was a
mounted infantry it can be surmised that William had his own horse. The
unit was mustered into service on August 16, 1862 when William was only 15
years old.
I
am descended from Peter C and Martha (Stines) Lehman through their
daughter Grace who married Lewis Alva Elston (Engeldow) who were both
school teachers. |
